The Chicago Way, Part I (I’m sure there will be more)

Kind of an old one, but back in the news again recently.  Take a look at this article and see if you can find the word “Democrat” or “Democratic” in it.  (Good luck)

The Clemens Perjury Investigation - or - How Can We Waste Taxpayer Money Today?

The “Justice” Department has decided that Roger Clemens needs to be tried for perjury for allegedly making false statement under oath before Congress.  Let’s get the obvious problem out of the way first:

Congress is concerned that someone sat in their chambers and lied?  Really?  This Congress?  The Democrat members of this Congress can’t move their lips without lying.  Joe Wilson was right when he pointed it out in the House chamber when Obama did it.  I suppose it’s a very good thing for Congress that they are not under oath when they speak before their own bodies.  I personally believe that before anyone testifies before any Congressional Committee, the entire Committee should FIRST be required to take the same oath that will be required of those there to testify.  Honestly, if I were called before Congress to testify, I would absolutely refuse to take the oath until they had done so.

Now to the meat.  It will be interesting to see what evidence the persecution (no, that wasn’t a typo) has in this case.  I have heard no allegation that there is any, other than the testimony of a witness that provided that testimony in exchange for some level of immunity.  Not exactly an unimpeachable witness.  If this is a simple case of the word of the defendant Clemens against the word of the informant, I can’t see how this can go to trial.  If there is not significantly more evidence than this, the trial will be an absolutely unnecessary expense to the American taxpayers.  We are not supposed to be paying to make some US Attorney’s name.

Lastly, why was Congress involved in this to begin with?  What a complete waste of time and money!  The list of things that Congress could have been investigating was, and these day definitely is, long and filled with far more important matters.  These idiots can spend huge amounts of time and money to investigate steroid use in baseball; which essentially boils down to small-scale criminal activity mostly at the local level of jurisdiction, but not to find out who is financing a mosque at ground zero.  Not to find out what laws Charlie Rangel broke.  Not to investigate the Black Panther case.  Not to determine whether recent persecutions by the “Justice” Department such as the Arizona immigration lawsuit have been politically motivated.  We seriously pay these people for this?

Maybe someone needs to tell these people that “justice will be served” doesn’t mean to “serve” the political and personal whims of those at the Department of “Justice”.

Obama Administration Plans to Ration Military Retiree Health Care

It might not look like it on the surface, but that appears to be the plan.  Defense Secretary Gates, as part of his personal lame duck session, is hoping to raise costs for the Tri-Care insurance plan that many military retirees depend on.

Gates’ assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Jonathan Woodson, has made statements before Congress indicating that rationing is definitely part of the plan.  As reported at DailyPress.com Woodson

“referred to more cost-efficient “therapies” and addressing “waste in the way we deliver care because of the culture of medicine. And there’s opportunity to decrease the variability of care that might result in cost savings.”

This doesn’t take much reading between the lines.  This is politi-speak for rationing and lowering the amounts paid to Doctors for their services.  Tri-Care’s payments for services are already laughably low, and “decreasing the variability of care” aka lowering payments, will likely drive many Doctors and clinics out of military retiree care.

Raising premium payments is also a likely method that DoD will use to “cut costs”.  Obviously this cuts costs for DoD, but raises the costs significantly for retirees.  Military retired pay increases by a cost of living adjustment only.  These cost of living adjustments are part of the Federal budget process and are not guaranteed.  No connection has been previously made between the reduction in other promised benefits and the calculated cost of living change used to help determine COLA raises for military retirees.  This means that military retirees will very likely have their retired pay effectively reduced by the amount of Tri-Care premium increases.

How much will these premiums increase?  We don’t know yet.  What we do know is that we have made promises to our military retirees regarding medical care and retirement pay.  These promises are being broken almost daily by the current Congress.  Gates points out that medical care as part of the Defense budget will be approximately $50 billion next year.  This is a huge amount of money, but Congress was willing to spend more than that to pay off teacher’s and other State-level public workers (unions) as an “emergency” spending bill.

Which is the greater emergency for the Federal government?  Saving the pay of State workers to whom no promise was made, or saving the promised benefits of those who put their lives on the line for this Country?

Seems like a pretty easy decision to me.

Corruption Watch

I will be posting information regarding Federal political corruption charges and convictions under this category.

Some unwritten rules of the media to be aware of:

·         If the subject is a Republican:

o   Stories will be carried front-page, probably lead

o   Every attempt will be made to present charges and allegations as fact

o   Party affiliation will be mentioned prominently, and if possible multiple times

o   Affiliations with prominent Republicans will be played up, and inferences of collusion will be made

o   Association with the Tea Party or other groups that the left does not like will be inferred

·         If the subject is a Democrat:

o   Stories will be carried as far from the front page as possible

o   Facts and even convictions will be presented as allegations

o   Party affiliation will not be mentioned at all

o   Affiliations with prominent Dems will be ignored or presented as inconsequential

o   Association with nutroots groups such as DFA or MoveOn.org will be downplayed so as not to dirty the image of the subject’s benefactors

o

The party affiliation rule is very important.  This will usually be the biggest clue to the political affiliation of the subject.

William Martinez, Liberal, Hopefully Not Confirmed Liberal

William Martinez is Obama’s pick, nominated by Senators Bennet and Udall, to fill a District Court of Colorado vacancy.  As Senator Udall proudly states on his website;

“I believe in strong, well-balanced courts that serve the needs of our citizens. Bill Martinez brings that sense of balance because of his broad legal background, professionalism, and outstanding intellect. I am pleased to have recommended Bill, and I am certain that, once confirmed, he will make an outstanding judge.”

He is joined in his excitement about the qualifications of Martinez by Senator Bennet on his web site;

“Bill embodies the American dream and is an immigrant success story. He was born in Mexico and immigrated with his family to the United States at a young age. He was the first in his family to attend college and law school. His rise through the legal profession is a great example to law students in my state.”

“I am proud to come before this Committee and highlight the experience and accomplishments of this superbly qualified nominee. Bill Martinez will be an asset to the federal bench. “

A well-balanced court.  The American dream.  Superbly qualified.  Broad legal background.  Sense of balance.

You would think from such comments that Martinez was a centrist, non-activist judge to be.  You would be very wrong.  Let’s take a quick look at his questionnaire for judicial nominees that was presented to the Senate’s Committee on the Judiciary.

Martinez lists the following employment of interest:
The Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago.  This organization receives much of its funding from the Joyce Foundation.  The Joyce Foundation is known to advocate radical liberal and environmentalist positions such as the elimination of gun ownership rights and the destruction of industries that consume natural resources (such as logging).  The Joyce Foundation also supports MALDEF, the NAACP, the Sierra Club, the WWF, the ACLU, the National Council of La Raza, and other liberal organizations.  Barack Obama served on the Foundation’s board before becoming a U.S. Senator.

More interesting are Martinez’s memberships, which Senators Udall and Bennet fail to make any mention.  Let me just hit the high points:

Amnesty International
ACLU of Colorado
Colorado Public Radio
Greenpeace, USA
Human Rights Watch
International Rescue Committee
Mexican American Legal Defense & Education Fund
National Legal Aid and Defender Association

Most of you are probably aware that the first five organizations on this list run from very to radically liberal.  The final three are all (yes, that includes the IRC) advocates for illegal immigrants and support amnesty and full legal protection for illegals.  MALDEF advocates open borders, free college tuition for illegal immigrants, lowered educational standards to accommodate Hispanics, and voting rights for criminals.  Not exactly a “balanced” list is it?

Martinez cannot be expected to ignore his personal bias and agendas when such are so extreme and often run counter to the rule of law and our Constituion.

He will not serve a well-balanced court.  He does not support the American dream.  He is not superbly qualified, and in fact is entirely unqualified to serve on the Federal bench.  His legal background is certainly not broad; a more narrow background would be hard to find.  He certainly doesn’t embody a sense of balance.

The only appropriate action for the Senate would be to refuse confirmation of Martinez, but that won’t happen under a Congress that fully intends to thwart the will of the people as often as possible before (and after) election day.
